Please...Give Yourself a (Christmas) Break!

He said to me: “You really need to have a break”

I said to him: “I can’t possibly! - I’ve got too much to do”

He said to me: “But your list is never-ending so on that basis...?!”

I said to him: “if I take my foot off the pedal, I’ll just never get on top of it all’

He said to me: “if you take your foot off the pedal, the world will keep on turning.

“If you don’t take your foot off the pedal, the world will keep on turning.”

I looked at him blankly, my mind like a stuffed toy, filled with a million lists but becoming more scrambled by the moment.

“The difference is” he said, “that if you don’t stop, sit back and just watch the world turning, you’ll be a burnt-out heap on the floor. Useless to all. But, funnily enough, that world will keep on turning!”

Of course, he was right. This was a conversation I had with my partner the other day. I’m old enough and wise enough to know this truth and I’m guessing you are too. Except often we need someone else to remind us and to give us that nudge so that we actually schedule it in the diary - so that we actually action it -and finally push that ‘stop’ button.

The lead up to Christmas can be stressful for many and it is vital to remember that we all need to have a real break and to step right away from the things that are creating that brain fog, whether it is our jobs, the endless to-do list, mounting house-chores or complete emotional overwhelm. You want more energy and immunity and resilience? Then you have to re-fuel by first taking that necessary break.

And maybe you don’t get it all done. Drop the ball and see what happens. I guarantee it won't be as bad as you think! Look beyond and remember what is actually important – spending quality time with those you love (in an unstressed state!), having your health (which only gets worse with stress and overwhelm) and making great memories (which rarely come by killing yourself trying to keep on top of the housework!)

The best gift you can give yourself (and indeed, others) this Christmas is to GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK! So take a step back, ditch any guilt and try to enjoy and cherish precious times.

I’m taking a break now from work myself now and so I wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

And lastly - something that always helps me - "Remember to light a candle instead of cursing the darkness",
