Seeing It Through - it's an Accountability Thing

As the cleansing influence of the equinox can be felt for weeks (if not months after), think back to the Autumn Equinox (which took place on the 22nd September this year) and observe how you experienced this event. Make a note as to how you felt then and has anything changed since? If you made a promise to yourself, have you kept it and how easy or tough has that change or promise been to keep?

The easy (or easier!) part is declaring that you will do something about it (whatever that may be) but actioning that declaration and, further to that, sticking to that promise to yourself, is the hardest part. But if it’s not hard at first, it’s not real change...

I read recently that “All change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end!”

I couldn't agree more. And change is vital. If you’re not constantly changing or evolving, what are you? Well, you are stuck, frozen. You’re not really living! And that’s when people start to feel utterly depressed and start giving up on life. Sorry to sound morbid but this is reality. We are constantly learning, evolving and having to change – and those who resist these are the ones who start to feel isolated or that things are closing in on them.

I’ll let you into a little secret of my own – I find it very hard to ‘see things through’. I was always, since a child, great at starting things but rarely ever saw anything through to the end. Whether it was a new book, a new hobby, trying a new routine – I would start with effervescent enthusiasm and passion and then I would invariably lose interest, get bored, or just didn’t feel I had the stamina or mindset to get to the end – basically, when the going got tough, I fizzled out! I still find it tough to ‘see things through’ – I have to work really hard to push through that zone of discomfort. So I really do understand and empathise. Some people seem to have this laser focus, that unwavering, gritty determination – you know the ones I mean?! You watch them with envious jealousy whilst they declare they will achieve something, then subsequently devour that challenge like a steady solid military tank programmed to mow down every potential roadblock. The good news is that most people aren’t wired like this! However, you can learn to become more dedicated to your goals and you can learn to re-programme yourself to achieve more and create better habits, but that learning is a process in itself. And trying to do something solo is tough.

This is where having someone to be accountable to is key. With my lovely clients, half of what we do is create achievable practices that become healthy new habits for them – and half of why therapy or coaching is so successful, is because you have someone who believes in you, who is there to keep you on track and someone to be accountable to. Whether it is a friend, a partner or a therapist like me, accountability is what can really fuel you through the tough middle, messy part of change. Find the right accountability partner for you and things will be a lot easier, I promise!
