Struggling to get out of bed? You might just be really in tune...

Lean into winter and allow yourself deeper sleep

Do you struggle to get out of bed at the moment? I know that I’m finding it harder than, say, a month or two ago. Let’s just say that I’m not a Jumping Jack first thing in the mornings at the best of times! I like to take my time and slowly ease into the day. However, I had been quite proud of myself and started to wake myself up earlier than usual and use this quiet time to my advantage – doing some journaling and some meditation all before I’d usually get up! And I was really enjoying it. But recently it has been much more difficult. My body just doesn’t want to get up that early anymore. It doesn’t even allow my brain to fight it - it resolutely is not prepared to get up as early as I was!

I admit that those little gremlins, so familiar to me for so many years, did start popping into my head recently – “you’re really slipping, Natasha”; “ you aren’t getting nearly as much done in the mornings”; “can’t you just have some more ‘get up and go’?” They appeared, started jeering at me and then I told them where they could stick it and they got indefinitely squashed!

Why? Because they are just subconscious, personal, self-sabotaging and utterly useless thought patterns that briefly re-emerged. The fact of the matter remains that we are in deep autumn now and inching our way into winter. If we are humans that respond to the benefits of sunlight, then naturally we are not going to be as responsive come the start of winter when daylight hours are so much shorter. We are not going to be as productive overall because these are days when our bodies want to start storing our energy reserves and prepare for hibernation, like all other creatures on this earth.

FACT: We will get tired earlier in the day
FACT: We will struggle to emerge from our beds first thing
FACT: We will want to rest and snuggle on the sofa more
FACT: We will be drawn to heavier, richer foods because our bodies are wired to wanting to store more fat as energy reserves

I’m not being negative - these are just facts that resonate with the coming winter season. These are just NATURAL RESPONSES to the changing seasons and the shorter daylight hours we are now experiencing.

The main things to focus on at this time of the year:

ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance is key here to feeling more at one with yourself and nature.

💪 So toss that guilt aside and LEAN INTO the season.

💪 ALLOW yourself to wallow in bed for a few more cosy minutes. The main thing is to ENJOY the days, to ENJOY life, right? So don’t reprimand yourself over this sticking points – life’s too short to waste precious energy in this way. Don’t beat yourself up for merely being in touch with nature... do the opposite and congratulate yourself for being so in tune!

LET YOURSELF GET LONGER, DEEPER SLEEP

If you focus on better sleep at this time of the year:

💪 Your immunity will be stronger

💪 You will be more productive in the hours of daylight we do have

Let’s face it, we’ve all had better times – as well as the harsher elements of the season setting in and the days being shorter, a lot of us are also in lockdown again... so all I want to say is this: give yourself a break and let go of any self-sabotage. You will instantly feel more relaxed and more content with life.
